H Q Flight
HQ Flight was charged with checking the standard of the flying instructors.
This they did, sometimes with great fear as it was well known
for the pilots to regularly fly under bridges and power lines or
fly so low they would spin the wheels on river water.
The flight was commanded by Flt Lt W Tait, known as Uncle
Bill.
Bill was a fine aerobatic pilot and was hard to shake up, he flew in
competitions
and frequently came 2nd in the RAF aerobatics championships.
He also gave displays at other stations and open days, one time while at
USAF B47 base Brize Norton, an American pilot was herd to say,
"That guy's either the finest pilot I've ever seen or he's going to
crash!"
